What is Neurological Levels?

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a methodology that is very useful in helping one understand themselves and others better.

As a part of this framework, Neurological level is a model created by Robert Dilts and Todd Epstein.

This model essentially helps usto organise our thoughts and feelings at different levels, moving from concreteto abstract levels.

It also helps an individual to understand the levels that they have to work at in order to bring about a change in their life.

Often, the level that they are operating at can be identified by noticing the language patterns that they are using.

It helps them develop newer perspectives towards a problem or issue.

NLP Coaching

This is a tool that is useful to any NLP Trainer or NLP Coach when dealing with their client as it informs them of their frame of mind.

This model is also often taught in NLP courses.
As in any NLP course, learning these levels and thereafter identifying their applications is of most importance.

The Levels in Neurological Levels

Neurological level NLP

At the bottom of the pyramid of Neurological Level is the 'Environment'.
'Environment' refers to the external conditions that affect an individual such as the place they live, the sounds around them, the people around them among others.
It is the aspect of our world that we perceive with our senses as we act, react and respond to situations.
By changing one’s environment, one can change their experience and behaviour.
If we were to see it from the perspective of 'Meta Model' which involves questions, it will be questions like Who? What? Where?
Also by doing so, we can also gain awareness of a specific behaviour or trigger that needs to be resolved through the NLP Coaching session/ NLP Therapy.
Remember, recognising a trigger is a key to resolving a reaction to a situation.

The second level in the pyramid is the 'Behaviour'.'
Behaviour' involves what we say or do in order to respond to our environment.
It includes our externally seen actions and reactions to a situation. Behaviour talks about the 'What?' questions.

The third level consists of one’s 'Capabilities'.
It serves to incorporate how we do what we do.
This includes our skills, states and knowledge. In terms of questions, it answers the 'How?'.

The fourth level includes our 'Values and Beliefs'.
It serves to answer the reason behind why we do what we do. It refers to our inner yardstick or compass that guides our actions.
In terms of questions, it answers the 'Why?'.
Recognising and gaining clarity of this question can be rewarding since you gain to know the driver of the actions/behaviours in life.

The fifth level is the 'Identity' aspect, which is extremely powerful.
This level represents who we are as a person. Identity refers to how we define ourselves in terms of our relationship with ourselves and the world.
It is the central aspect of an individual’s personality.
This also includes aspects related to an individual’s self-image.
We can have multiple identities since we can operate through different beliefs, capabilities and behaviours at a given time such as differences in personal and professional life.
However, which identity is the most prevalent and most important to you at a given time will define your priorities in life and thereby the decisions you take in life.T

The last level is considered the highest state that one can reach and it refers to one’s 'Higher Purpose' and mission in their life.
It gives a sense of meaning and direction in one’s life and it connects us with something that is bigger than ourselves.
This has to do with our affiliations and deepest purpose, which may be religious, philosophical, familial, or social.
This spiritual dimension provides our existence with direction, shaping, and support. The "big questions" of life—"Why do we live?" and "Why are we here?" and "What is the meaning of life?" are pondered upon.

Benefits of Neurological Levels

Hence, each level is influenced by the other levels, thus creating a hierarchy of meanings and actions.
This model of the neurological levels has a variety of applications which include NLP coaching/ NLP therapy / NLP Healing.

The neurological levels represent the logical structuring of the levels of one’s experience, thereby also enabling us to understand our and others behaviour.

The neurological levels can also help in reframing our perspectives of life, which allows us to better match personal development with identity and purpose.
