There are many NLP techniques - Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques- for manifestation and creating a transformation in life.
An important aspect of creating a change is to modify or change the belief.
On this page I have shared about beliefs and changing the beliefs through sub modalities. These type of NLP techniques are often taught in NLP training courses.
Belief is generally defined as something that an individual has accepted as a reality based on his set of experiences which could be direct or indirect experiences.
The beliefs an individual carries of the world around them may not always be a reality but a reflection of their reality. There are certain beliefs that an individual holds that limits him from living his life fully.
Hence there are many NLP techniques that are taught in Transformative NLP Trainings that are designed to remove these limiting beliefs. Thereby a person can live the live to the fullest.
Remember, our behaviours stem from our beliefs. Hence, our beliefs mobilise our behavior in a particular direction. We operate based on our set of beliefs that we are carrying.
Beliefs can also wield such amazing power over an individual that it can even convince them to do actions that exist in the extreme ends of the spectrum.
You can also convince a person to do or not do something when we convince them at the level of a belief.
Also remember that beliefs are not set in stone but are subject to change.
Beliefs that of the limiting nature, which include beliefs about self, can be changed as well. Therefore, we spend time during the transformative NLP courses to alter the beliefs by addressing the memories that are leading to the beliefs. Thereby bring about a perspective shift in a person’s life.
Before we go through the steps of the NLP technique of belief change, let us understand this process with an interesting analogy about how this helps to rewire your brain. Imagine your mind is like an old wall in your home—one that has been painted over many times. Some of those colors (beliefs) are bright and uplifting, while others are dull and make the space feel small and heavy. The usage of your sensory system is a submodalities based NLP technique (often taught in NLP training courses), used to bring a different perspective to a belief.
Now, say there's a patch of paint (a belief about yourself) that you no longer like. First, you inspect it closely—how it looks, how it makes you feel, and how it compares to another patch where the paint is uncertain and peeling (a doubt). You notice the differences: maybe the unwanted color is dark and thick, while doubt flickers like a fading stain.
Next, you experiment with these differences. You try making the old color blurrier, less intense—testing which changes help it fade the most. Then, you think of the fresh, vibrant color (the belief you want) and begin painting it over the old one. But instead of just slapping on a new coat, you layer it carefully, blending it into the wall so it becomes a natural part of the space, a process that strengthens over time.
Before stepping back, you check how this new color fits with the whole house—does it match the surroundings? Does it enhance the space, or does it create unwanted clashes? If something feels off, you adjust until it blends perfectly.
Finally, you wipe off the last remnants of the old paint, letting the new shade settle in, making the space feel fresh, expansive, and true to you. And as you step back, you realize—this isn’t just a coat of paint. It’s a transformation of how you see yourself, one that makes you feel at home in your own mind.
This is the magic that one can create when changing doubt to understanding and having a sense of the different beliefs you possess without them being in conflict with each other. For a new belief to form, the older one has to weaken and be broken. If not, the existing belief will not allow the individual to consider the new belief. It is also often observed that the new belief is very different to the new belief and the stronger the belief, the more resistance to change it is. Beliefs are malleable and you can be in control of what you believe in by just switching the way you look at things. NLP trainings are meant to be a transformational experience!
The following technique makes use of the concept of subodalities to effectively change the beliefs.
Now let's try an exercise to explore this idea further. Look at the steps given below:
1 - Now think of a belief about yourself that you would like to see differently.
2 - Look at two experiences, one about a belief and the other about doubt.
3 - Look at how these two experiences are different- look at each aspect of these experiences. Highlight the differences between these experiences and make note of these differences.
4 - The next step is to take this list of differences and test one of them at a time, in order to find out which of them are most powerful in changing belief to doubt.
5 - Identify which submodality is more powerful when changing the various aspects of the images- trying to impose belief onto the doubt.
6 - Now, think about the belief that you would like to have in positive terms, without any negations. Think of what you do want to believe, not what you don't want to believe.
7 - Now, frame that belief not in terms of an end or goal, but in terms of a process or ability that would result in your getting that goal. Make it seem as if it is already a work in progress, that will result in you reaching your goal.
8 - Finish with an ecology check. Do this by envisioning how you would now act if you have this new belief and think of ways that this can be problematic for you, your environment and others. If there occurs something, redo the process again or if there is nothing, label this as the new belief.
9 - Now look at the picture of the belief that you do not like to have and then begin to describe that picture with the attributes of the picture of doubt. For example, if the doubt picture was described as being fuzzy, flashing, small and borderless, add the same effects to the unliked belief.
10 - Once that old belief slowly fades away, let the new belief come up onto this visual field and then move it to the centre of the field, if not already there. Now add the attribute modalities of the belief that was originally understood.
11 - Notice the changes that are happening in your body as you replace the old belief with a new one and acknowledge the changes that have occurred.
